Counterpoint Celebrates ‘Seasons’

Counterpoint, Vermont’s professional vocal ensemble, will join Northfield-based pianist Alison Cerutti, in “Seasons,” an exciting and eclectic celebration of the changes of the year. The program includes the complete Estaciones Portenas (Seasons of Buenos Aires), a set of four tangos by Argentine master Astor Piazzolla, and Early Morning Mists, an evocative cantata by Israeli composer Yehezkel Braun setting his own seasonal haiku. In addition, there are Romantic partsongs by Felix Mendelssohn and Johannes Brahms, songs from Broadway’s Golden Age, and a selection of recent works depicting Vermont’s own seasonal cycle by local composers Sara Doncaster, Peter Hamlin, Erik Nielsen, Kevin Quigley, and Carol Wood.image003

“In Vermont we are lucky to have wonderful seasonal changes,” explained Artistic Director Nathaniel G. Lew, “and there is a wealth of wonderful music that explores that theme. Counterpoint has sung a number of these works for many years, but we have never put them together like this before. It is exciting to hear such a diversity of songs and styles fit together so beautifully. On this concert, there is truly something for everyone!”

Founded by legendary choral director and arranger Robert De Cormier in 2000, and based in Montpelier, Counterpoint is dedicated performing choral chamber music and engaging with student musicians to enhance the cultural life of communities in Vermont and beyond. Praised for their “clarity, skill” and “sophisticated musical expressiveness,” the ensemble presents concerts throughout New England and the surrounding region, and has toured the Midwest. The group has recorded seven CDs with Albany Records and has released four further CDs independently, including most recently “All Mixed Up: Counterpoint Sings the Music of Pete Seeger,” available at CDBaby.com.
